Vårø Contemporary

Residency

A stay at Vårø Contemporary offers artists time, space, and stillness on the island of Tåsinge in southern Denmark.

We are artist-run, and our residency reflects that — it is hands-on, personal, and built around what artists actually need.

What we offer

Residents have access to a large project room in a dedicated building, a guest room with a double bed and private bathroom, and a working studio with views of the sea. The property includes a courtyard garden, greenhouse, and garden.

Access to our music studio, with introduction and supervision by Mikkel Konyher, can be arranged as an add-on for artists working with sound or recording.

Stays range from a long weekend to four weeks.

Where we are now

Vårø Contemporary is currently unfunded. We cannot yet offer artist fees or cover costs for food, materials, or travel, but this is something we are working towards. What we can offer is space, time, and genuine attention to your practice.

Exchange

We ask that residents contribute something to the space or the local community of Bjerreby during their stay. This could be an open studio, a conversation, a small event, or something else that feels right. We will document and share work from the residency on our website and social media, always in dialogue with the artist.

Apply

Vårø Contemporary welcomes applications on a rolling basis. As we are still in an early phase, we review applications as they come in rather than through fixed deadlines, so feel free to reach out at any time.

We accept 3–5 artists, projects, or groups per year.

To apply, send the following to :

  • A short note about what you are hoping to work on during your stay and why Vårø Contemporary feels like the right context for it.
  • A CV of no more than 2 pages.
  • A portfolio showing 5 works.

We welcome applications from artists at all career stages and across practices, particularly those working with or around sound and moving images.
